Asc Awards 2020: Roger Deakins Wins Top Prize for ‘1917’
Cinematographer Roger Deakins won the top prize Saturday night at the 34th annual Asc Awards (at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland) for his bravura camera work on “1917,” the continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, directed by Sam Mendes.

Deakins beat Phedon Papamichael (“Ford v Ferrari”), Rodrigo Prieto (“The Irishman”), Robert Richardson (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), and Lawrence Sher (“Joker”). The latter three are Oscar-nominated with Deakins. The fifth nominee, Jarin Blaschke (“The Lighthouse”), earned the Asc Spotlight Award for his gritty, Gothic-looking black-and-white cinematography.

Additionally, Fejmi Daut and Samir Ljuma took the Asc Documentary category for “Honeyland.”

Given the Best Picture momentum and universal acclaim for the technical feat, Deakins moves a step closer to his second Oscar. He finally landed his first with “Blade Runner 2049″ after 14 Academy Award nominations. Deakins leads the Asc with five wins.

Gretel & Hansel Trailer Teases Terrifying Update On The Classic Story

Fairy tales are often far more sinister than their reputation gives them credit for, and this new trailer released for the upcoming Gretel & Hansel looks to be maintaining that tradition by diving directly into the darkness of the medieval Black Forest.

The story is one of the most famous of the assortment collected by academics Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, seeing a brother and sister get lost in the woods after their trail of breadcrumbs leading back home is eaten by birds. They stumble upon a building made of bread, cake and sugar – most often referred to as a gingerbread house – wherein lives a witch who plans to fatten them up and eat them.

This version comes courtesy of Osgood Perkins, director of the underrated and sinister I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and stars Sophia Lillis (It: Chapter One) as the eponymous lost girl and Alice Krige as the witch.

Chris Albrecht To Run International TV Production Company Launched By Legendary
Former Starz CEO Chris Albrecht has lined up his next gig — a production company targeting the global TV market. Albrecht will have a stake in the company, majority owned by Legendary.

The company will function independently while Legendary will finance its slate and provide infrastructure.

Getting someone of Albrecht’s caliber and talent relations in the fold is a boost for Legendary’s TV operation, which has faced challenges gaining traction following the 2016-17 executive shakeups. The company’s two current series, Lost In Space on Netflix and Carnival Row, were both developed and sold by the previous regime.

Legendary TV had been ramping development over the past year, with the new venture likely to boost the existing pipeline. Albrecht’s focus will be the fast-growing international marketplace — both traditional and streaming — and need for high-quality, relatable programming.

When he exited Starz in February, Albrecht, who previously did a successful

Chris Albrecht Teams With Legendary for International TV Production Venture (Exclusive)

  • Variety
Former HBO and Starz chief Chris Albrecht is teaming with Legendary on a venture designed to produce and finance TV series for the international market.

The deal calls for Legendary and Albrecht to form a new, still-unnamed entity that will operate separately from Legendary TV but still have access to Legendary’s production infrastructure and administrative support services.

Albrecht aims to take advantage of the heightened demand for TV content around the world, as well as growing concerns by big players overseas that the supply of high-end programming from the U.S. will shrink in the coming years as Hollywood’s major studios hold on to properties to feed in-house streaming platforms such as Disney’s Disney Plus and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max. The initial focus will be on finding drama series that can travel around the world and qualify for U.K. and EU tax incentive programs. Growing markets
