Barney is more than a bit disappointed when he thinks everyone has forgotten the fifth anniversary of starting work as a Deputy Sheriff. They were just leading him on and have a cake and a nice gift waiting for him. Andy has just received bad news however: Deputies are now subject to regular height and weight requirements and Barney misses the minimum on both counts. Everyone is pretty sure they can put the extra weight on him but how do you make someone almost a full inch taller? Andy thinks he has the solution but still has to be creative come the day of the physical exam. Written by garykmcd

The power of friendship...
24 October 2010 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

This is a sweet episode of "The Andy Griffith Show" because it further solidifies the strong friendship bonds between Barney and Andy--and also shows how much his friends in Mayberry care.

The show begins with a surprise party for Barney. His anniversary with the Sheriff's Department has arrived and he thought no one rememberer--but they did and congratulate him on a job well done. This excitement, however, is cut short when they receive word that new state standards for the department would eliminate Barney from being eligible to bean employee. He is too short and too light weight for these standards and he decides to resign. However, his friends encourage him to go to extreme lengths to stretch him and fatten him up--and it appears to be possible he MIGHT just make the cutoff. But, at the last minute his goal becomes unattainable....until Andy comes up with a brilliant solution.

Clever, sweet and charming--this is a nice episode from start to finish.
