When Clara Edwards gets an opening for a new piano student, Aunt Bee thinks Opie should take lessons. Andy isn't keen on the idea and is surprised that Opie is even interested. Opie assures everyone that he will work hard at learning the instrument and will practice every day after school. A conflict arises however when the school hires an ex-NFL player, Flip Conroy, as its new football coach. With football practice scheduled for same time as his lessons or practice time, Opie finds himself trying to be in two places at the same time. Opie and his friend Arnold cook up a scheme that doesn't quite fool anyone. Written by garykmcd

Where did the writers come up with a name like Flip Conroy? And the actor is Rockne Tarkington? I doubt it. It's unlikely Opie would be interested in piano lessons and just as improbable, given his lack of rhythm and his ungainly running style, that he could play quarterback. Did the venerable tire drill at football practice ever help anybody do anything better than he would have done without it? Check out the weird green helmet on one of Opie's teammates—the face mask sits up above his nose like the guy who put it together was too drunk to coordinate his hands. The ragtag team of youngsters has some of most ill-fitting uniforms and some of the least protective headgear ever worn by football players. The thin, aluminum foil-like skin of the lunar landers of the 70s offered greater safety to astronauts than these helmets do to these kids. It's always a treat when Mrs. Larch shows up in an episode with her impeccable comic timing. Just watch her funny response when Bee suggests that Opie's pianism is improving— her double affirmative is doubly laughable. Is Sheldon Golomb really playing the Taylor's piano? It looks like it, but I can't be certain. His scenes with Andy are always amusing, the street-wise Jewish New Yorker discomfiting Andy's efforts to get straight answers out of him.
