Storyline

Aunt Bee and Clara Johnson are both jarring homemade pickles. The only difference is that Clara's are good enough to win blue ribbons at the county fair eleven years and counting while Aunt Bee's taste like she floats them in kerosene. The boys are too polite to tell Aunt bee the truth about her pickles and decide to switch Aunt Bee's pickles with store-bought pickles. The plan backfires when Bee decides to enter her pickles in the contest. Written by tomtrekp/edited by statmanjeff

Goofs

Throughout this episode, Aunt Bee refers to making a batch of pickles as making 8 quarts. She tells Andy and Barney that they're the lucky ones because she made a double batch - 16 jars. All recipes for a batch of pickles are for 7 quarts, not 8, because 7 is the number of quart jars that will fit in the standard, blue enamel, water bath canner. This canner size has been the standard for at least the last half of the 20th century and probably even earlier. See more »

Aunt Bee Shines
27 April 2016 | by jpop59See all my reviews

Aunt Bee is usually known for her prowess in the kitchen including her succulent fried chicken and other fine southern recipes, however in this episode we learn she doesn't know how to make an edible pickle. What's amusing is she's the only one that doesn't realize her pickles taste like "kerosene". As usual, Andy forgoes honesty to prevent her feelings from getting hurt so there's a lot of plotting going on behind her back to avoid her finding out what people really think. This all goes into high gear when Aunt Bee decides to enter her pickles in the Annual Pickle Contest at the local fair. This episode is a good showcase for Francis Bavier who always shines as Aunt Bee. A very funny episode.
