Peggy Converse and Lon Chaney

CAVALCADE OF America was a half hour TV series adapted from DuPont's long running radio series just wrapping up six months after the debut of its TV cousin. Depicting the achievements of little known figures in American history, 132 episodes were produced over five seasons, first on NBC, then ABC. This entry logically follows up the previous season's "Moonlight School," centering on teacher Cora Wilson Stewart (Emlen Davies), by bringing back veteran heavy Lon Chaney in the same type of role, a Kentucky mountain man objecting to education for his people. The subject of "Stay On, Stranger" is Alice Lloyd (Peggy Converse), the still living founder of Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, and her efforts to educate the children of tiny Caney Creek, despite opposition from the bitter Zeke Wells (Chaney), who blames schooling for the mysterious disappearance of his beloved daughter Lorna. Chaney's limited screen time belies his second billing, here reunited with Edgar Buchanan, his co-star from "The Silver Star." Lead Peggy Converse was married to actor Don Porter, and remembered by horror fans for her roles in 1946's "The Brute Man" and 1958's "The Thing That Couldn't Die."
