  • Mainwaring is extremely annoyed that all the platoon - except Godfrey, who was too slow - have used up all their ammunition firing in vain at a low-flying German aeroplane. An inquiry is ordered - along with a new case of ammunition, which duly arrives. The captain in charge of the inquiry, which takes place in the church hall in competition with choir practice, feels it a waste of his time but talks the men through what happened. Jones says he gave the order to shoot. Mainwaring corrects him by saying 'Fire', which the platoon does, making a hole in the roof.

  • Mainwaring's platoon makes a shambles even of just using the church hall or cleaning a gun, something Frank's nagging mum solves in a second without similar damage to parish property. Worse, carrying out the captain's orders to shoot at Nazi aircraft means they can't properly account for being out of ammunition. Mainwaring had to 'do the right thing' formally, so two HQ officers grudgingly come and sit with him in a court of inquiry, with full regalia or as close as they can manage. That proves a torment for judges, platoon and other witnesses as well as church hall users and - property.
