Storyline

Vincent Kayle is arrested by federal agents while leaving his job with an airplane manufacturer. He is charged with violating the Espionage Act and engages the services of the Prestons after seeing them on a TV show. Kayle refuses to tell the Prestons anything and insists upon pleading innocent but not taking the witness stand. The U.S. Attorney invites the elder Preston to inspect Kayle's apartment and shows him a collection of miniature cameras, a sophisticated photography lab, shoes and drawers with hidden compartments, burned fragments of microfilm and a shortwave transmitter. Although he attempts to provide innocent reasons for the existence of everything the elder Preston is obviously shaken. In the meantime, the Prestons are under intense pressure from clients and the public to drop the case. The only information the Prestons have about Kayle is that he grew up in a small town in Iowa. The younger Preston visits this town and discovers that Vincent Kayle died at birth. The U.S....
