Having saved the life of a suicidal fellow priest Ted gets a call from Father Buzz Cagney in Los Angeles, inviting him to work with him. Ted is excited but lacks the heart to tell Dougal, Jack and Mrs Doyle that they cannot go with him. However when Ted learns that his prospective parish is run-down and violent he decides against going - much to the relief of the others - and resigns himself to the fact that he will probably never leave Craggy Island.

Did You Know?
'Going to America' was always intended to be the finale of the series. Originally, the writers intended to end the episode with a scene at the 'It's still great being a priest' convention, in which Kevin is once again outside on a window ledge considering suicide. This time, Ted joins him instead of convincing him not to do it because he is apparently depressed by the fact that he'll never escape Craggy Island. This ending was abandoned in favor of the montage scene because Dermot Morgan died of a heart attack the day after filming was concluded. The writers did not feel the original ending was very funny anyway. See more

You know what I do with $400? I wipe my ass with it.
Good God. And can that still be used as legal tender?
