Victoria along with Sam and Pedro are returning to the ranch when they spot a burning wagon. At Victoria's urging they check it finding a young man and woman dead but a small baby alive. Dan Casememt arrives who is the dead man's father and the baby's grandfather. Against Sam's judgment, Dan buries the dead couple. Due to the delay the Apache have time to return and attack. Dan's ability with his rifle is a major factor in repelling the Apaches. When he tries to leave with baby Joey, Sam stops him and takes his guns. They leave together for the High Chaparral which is fifty miles away. At a river crossing Sam holds off the Apache while the others continue until the horses tire out. Sam catches up but they are cornered. After the horses rest, Sam decides to let Pedro go alone for help. However, it looks bleak for the rest of them as the Apache continue to attack including the use of fire arrows.
