When the case against the Abingdon gang comes under scrutiny, Morse and Lewis must travel to Australia to locate their prime informant who was resettled there with his entire family in exchange for the information he provided the police. When they get there, they find the informant, Kenny Stone (now known as Mike Harding), is somewhat difficult to pin down. When they learn that someone in Mike's family subscribes to a newspaper from home, they fear that members of his old gang may also be looking for him. When Harding's daughter is kidnapped, they have two people to find, but not surprisingly Morse and the local constabulary knock heads from the outset. What Morse learns about the original convictions, however, turns the entire case on its head. Written by garykmcd

Did You Know?

In a moment of anguish, Morse briefly addresses Lewis as "Robbie" - the first time in the entire series he has used his sergeant's first name, and there is only one subsequent use of it (in "Cherubim And Seraphim" in series 6). See more »

Australian Sergeant Scott Humphries orders another cop to check where someone was between the hours of "half two and half three". This is a British way of saying the time, and there's nowhere in Australia, especially in country New South Wales, where anybody would say it that way. The correct Australian way would be to say "half past two and half past three". Typically the pronunciation would also be very informal, sounding like "ha' past two and ha' past three" See more »

Detective Sergeant Lewis: [Admiring the beautiful countryside] Garden of Eden, this is!
Chief Inspector Morse: [Laconically] In that case, watch out for snakes.

Filled With Guilt
27 February 2018 | by HitchcocSee all my reviews

This episode is more of pedestrian police effort. Somewhere in the deep dark past, Morse became involved in a case involving the killing of a fellow police officer. His overzealousness at that time has brought about far ranging consequences. He and Lewis end up in Australia, seeing a family that provided evidence for this prior case. They are in a kind of British witness protection program. Morse and Lewis are not welcomed and he tends to be as irascible as usual. But someone is out for vengeance and that provides the goal. Sometimes things just don't work out.
