Did You Know?

This is the second time B.J. is given a motorcycle. The first, which included a sidecar, he and Hawkeye were given after rescuing a farmer in need in " The Yalu Brick Road" (1979). The one he gets in this episode, he keeps until the end of the series; it's this bike he rides in his iconic exit during the series finale. See more »

Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce: [to Clayton after Nurse Lacey motions to him in Post Op] Ah, would you excuse me for one second? Uh, it's, uh, a call to the wild.
Clayton Kibbee: [Thumbs up & clicking sound he makes] Why, sure, good luck.
Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce: [Walking with her over to private area] Ah, Lieutenant Lacey!... no doubt curious about tonight. I got it all planned. We'll meet at the Motor Pool at 8:00 and drive each other crazy.
Nurse Lacey: Hawkeye, I'm afraid I can't make it.
Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce: [In unsettled tone] Can't make it? No.
Nurse Lacey: I'm gonna have to take a rain check.

How Much Does a Heming Weigh?
28 April 2015 | by HitchcocSee all my reviews

A very famous Ernest Hemingway type war correspondent, Clayton Kibbee, shows up at the MASH. Men and women fawn all over him, wanting his attention. He has a gimmick going. He has brought six pints of blood from the states and plans to write about the people who are being given that blood. Unfortunately, the first soldier to receive his contribution was injured when he hit a rock and fell off his motorcycle. The second was using a hand grenade in a fishing pond. His buddy slipped and he ended shrapnel in his leg. What happens that truly annoys Hawkeye, is that Kibbee takes these events and totally fictionalizes them to make the men look like heroes. In a sidebar, the motorcycle guy gives B.J. the bike, not wanting to ever get on it again. B.J. fixes it up and the big showoff takes off on it one morning with unfortunate results. The point of this is, of course, that writers like this guy glorify war and make it seem glamorous and desirable to young kids. Two of the injured recognize his name immediately.
