Inspector Jean Claude Fornier is visiting Hawaii in honor of Magnum winning the award for the best private investigator of the year. Just as Fornier is about to present the award to Magnum, the inspector collapses. When Inspector Fornier's death is ruled a murder, Magnum is determined to find those responsible. Before long Magnum finds he has some unwanted help. Luther Gillis and, one time meter maid turned private investigator, Tracy Spencer, are also on the case. Magnum tries to blow them off while he follows a lead from Fornier's notebook and comforts Carrol on the death of her lover. Magnum discovers Fornier's true mission on the islands was to investigate an international drug smuggling ring involving the Richard Lindley detective agency, Spencer's employer. As Magnum investigates further, evidence begins to point to the involvement of Spencer herself. Written by Christopher D. <>

The hotel detective was played by Stephen J. Cannell. While it was intended that Jim Rockford would appear as a character in this story, a Rockford connection remains, as Cannell was a writer and producer of a number of Rockford episodes and TV movies. A prolific writer and producer, he was best known for his detective shows. See more »

The Magnum PI All-Star game
29 July 2019 | by grantssSee all my reviews

Magnum is about to receive the award for Best PI in Hawaii when the keynote speaker, a famous police detective, is murdered. This reunites Magnum with many old faces.

The episode where the producers went "Hey, wouldn't be cool if we could get all the major sometime-characters / guest stars from the last few seasons together in one episode?" So we have Luther Gillis (Eugene Roche), Lt. Gordon "John Wayne" Katsumoto (Clyde Kusatu), Jean Claude Fornier (Paul Verdier) and Tracy Spencer (Annie Potts) all together. Throw in writer-producer Stephen J Cannell as the hotel detective and its like an All-Star game.

Not that this necessarily makes the episode better than most, it just makes it very familiar-face-filled. Ultimately it is pretty good, though largely formulaic. Plus, I always found Luther Gillis incredibly irritating, so that doesn't help. Gordon Katsumoto was always good for a laugh though.
