Did You Know?

According to Dandy Jim Buckley, the treasure is $40,000. It consists of two fifty pound bags of gold dust. Gold went for $18.93 to $18.96 per ounce from 1850 until 1918. Gold prices were very stable in the 19th century. So a fifty pound bag (800 oz. X 18.93) would be worth $15,144. So the two bags would only be worth $30, 288. Not $40,000. See more »

Bret Maverick: [narrating] in 1875, gold was discovered in the Black Hills of Dakota... and a great stampede of gold-hungry men was started... thousands coming up the wide Missouri by steamboat. Dance-hall girls and entertainers... men who'd spent their last dime on a new suit and a steamboat ticket. Men with strong backs... and men with a flair for making money with three walnut shells.

Dandy Jim Buckley
3 August 2018 | by bkoganbingSee all my reviews

This episode marks the first of five appearances that Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. makes as Dandy Jim Buckley on the Maverick series. Shortly he'd be getting a Warner Brothers series of his own with 77 Sunset Strip.

Zimbalist is a guy with a bigger gift of gab and more larceny in is heart than Bret Maverick himself. He proves to be James Garner's rescuer when Garner is slugged and robbed and thrown overboard from a river steamboat after cleaning out Chris Alcaide in a poker game.

The two go into a reluctant partnership after digging up some stolen loot for a stake and trailing Alcaide to a river town where he's cleaning out the local suckers, if not at cards than with a brawling prize fighter.

Garner and Zimbalist counter with a discovery of their own, a big gentle creature played by Mike Lane who is best remembered playing the Argentine giant Toro Moreno in The Harder They Fall.

It doesn't quite work out and to take Alcaide they have to do it the hard way at least for Garner.

The tongue in cheek style was arriving at the Maverick series. Kudos go to Joan Shawlee playing a saloon madam with a heart of gold her patented specialty.
