Storyline

The Enterprise comes across the SS Botany Bay, an ancient Earth spaceship from the 20th century traveling through deep space with a group of genetically engineered humans in suspended animation (a remnant from Earth's Eugenics Wars of the 1990s). Visiting this vessel automatically revives Khan, a charismatic Sikh warrior-type with five times the strength and ambition of regular humans, who immediately attracts the attentions of ship's historian Lt. Marla McGivers. While Kirk and Spock slowly learn he is Khan Noonien Singh, the last and greatest of Earth's tyrants, Khan uses both Marla and the ship's library to revive his superhuman compatriots and take over the Enterprise. Trivia

In Star Trek: The Next Generation: A Matter of Time (1991), Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew discuss the possibility that someone born in their lifetime might become "the next Adolf Hitler or Khan Singh." This seems to imply that Hitler and Khan have very similar reputations. If Khan's memory was so monstrous, it is very strange that Kirk and company welcomed Khan cordially at first, even after they learned who he was. See more »

Goofs

Kirk positions only one guard outside Khan's door, despite McCoy's previous assertion to Kirk that: "[Khan] could probably lift us both with one arm." See more »

Quotes

Captain James T. Kirk: Lieutenant, at any one time, the safety of this entire vessel might depend on the performance of a single crewman aboard, and the fact that you find a man strangely compelling to you personally...
Lt. Marla McGivers: Not personally, Captain. Professionally. My profession is historian, and when I specimen from the past alive, I'm in the sheer delight of examining his mind.
Captain James T. Kirk: And men were more adventuresome then. Bolder, more coloful.
Lt. Marla McGivers: Yes, sir, I think they were.
Captain James T. Kirk: Good. If I can have honesty, it's easier to overlook ...

A standout story

A lot of weak spots in this classic episode. How Khan could transport 72 of his superhumans to the Enterprise undetected by bridge personnel is a major flaw. The perfect actor was cast as Khan. The danger of trusting egotistical tyrants is the main point, a warning people always forget.
