Bettina is a widow of an Army officer who is traveling west with her two sons, Arthur and Nathan, their wives and kids and daughter Ginny who ix expecting her first child along with husband Gene. Her kids are all tied to her apron strings which is causing friction between Bettina and the two daughter-in-laws and Ginny and Gene. An incident between two of the grandsons in which one boy is injured by a thrown rock brings things to a boil when Bettina pushes the mothers out to comfort the injured grandson. The problems are visible to the wagon train staff who try to avoid the conflict until a fight between Rose and Arthur causes him to runoff. Written by Anonymous

It's all part of the life process
18 January 2014 | by bkoganbingSee all my reviews

This Wagon Train episode has Bette Davis doing her third and last appearance as a guest star on the series. In this story Bette is a women traveling with her three children and their families west on the Wagon Train. Her children are Joby Baker, Jud Taylor and Bennye Gatteys and Gatteys is pregnant.

Bette Davis on the big screen and small has played some truly horrible characters. Her character of Bettina May is far from any of them. But her problem is that she can't let go. Truth be told her kids are messing up, especially Joby Baker who is a hard man and a stern disciplinarian with his boys. Still they have a right to make their mistakes, it's all part of the life process.

When after a quarrel Taylor goes off on a toot and at the same time Gatteys goes into labor all the family issues come to a head. And Bette makes some life decisions.

Bette gives a restrained and dignified performance. For those expecting a full throttle Davis don't look at this story. But for a nice family drama you'll like what Davis does in this fine Wagon Train episode.
