Flint, Hawks and Wooster are leading a small group of wagons split off the main train to the Dakotas. A massive rain storm floods a river crossing. The options are to turn around or cross Sioux burial grounds hoping to make it through before the rain ends and the Sioux are out. Samuel Bleymier is a believer in signs and omens. He keeps his daughter Belle on a short leash. He says the signs indicate they should turn back. Flint takes a vote with Justin Claiborne casting the deciding vote to cross the Sioux grounds. Bleymier's wagon breaks a wheel after being stuck in a mud hole. He and Hawks with another man stay to fix the wheel while the rest go on. Belle rides with Wooster and a relationship has developed between her and Justin with plans to marry. When the rain clears, Justin decides to go on horseback to find her father's wagon.
