As a lone rider carrying the U.S. Mail rides through a rough, hilly and dry area two masked men stop him. When he tries to ride off, one of the robbers, Frank Parish, shoots him. They search the saddle bags containing the mail but don't find what they are seeking. Later, Josh arrives in Tucson, Arizona at the Continental Express Company office where he meets Inspector John Bascomb who had sent for him and rider Sam Jarvis. Bascomb explains that their riders are being ambushed on the road and they need help. They offer Josh $1000 to catch the killer. The holdups are on the road north to Flagstaff south of the stop at Tipton. They believe the robbers are after a $20,000 ring ordered by a miner who struck it rich. Josh rides ahead of Jarvis but is spotted and recognized. The robbers decide to switch the signs pointing to Tipton and the desert. Jarvis heads toward the desert but realizes there is a problem. Parish kills his horse but Jarvis wounds Dixon. Josh realizes there is a problem ...
