Storyline

Randall wins a large sum of money at poker in the saloon in Hooker, Texas. He is observed by a man called William Poe, who afterwards comes up with a proposal. He wants them to catch the outlaw Shawnee Bill together, and share the 2000 dollars reward. He cannot do it on his own, because he has a broken arm. His only condition is that he wants his share of 1000 dollars in advance. He knows that Shawnee Bill lives in Trinidad, Colorado, 80 miles from the Texas border, and 170 miles from here. Randall accepts the proposal, and gives Poe 1000 dollars. The next morning Poe puts the money in an envelope, writes an address on it, and puts it in the US mailbag in the Butterfield stage, which is just going to leave. When the stagecoach has disappeared, Poe turns to Randall, and says that the game is over, because he is Shawnee Bill himself, and Randall cannot bring him to Colorado through the rough country in a six days' ride.
