Josh rides into the town Rogue City leading Jumbo Kane who he captured for the $1000 bounty on his head after escaping from jail. He was sentenced to hang by Judge Coogan. Sheriff Taggert takes custody of Jumbo while telling his daughter Julie to send a telegraph message to authorize payment of the bounty. Several local men have come out including the Judge and clerk Henry Jackson to congratulate Josh for capturing Jumbo alive. As they walk away from the sheriff's office they hear multiple gunshots. Jumbo appears in the doorway of the office holding up Sheriff Taggert. He demands a fast horse and free passage in return for the wounded sheriff. Julie starts to deliver a horse when Josh shoos the horse away. Meanwhile, inside Jumbo checks the sheriff who is in fact dead. He then demands another hostage but no one wants to volunteer other than Julie. The Judge then volunteers Josh at gunpoint who is not surprised. The town is less interested in his life than that of the sheriff.
