Storyline

Rene and the Cafe staff prepare to welcome the invading British troops, and soon find that the invasion party includes a couple of old friends. Lieutenant Gruber and the Colonel are ordered by the General to stay and fight the invaders, rather than surrender. However, seeing as their defeat is almost certain, the two German officers decide to go AWOL, disguised in stolen British uniforms. The second half of the episode is set many years after the war ends. Gruber, the Colonel and Helga, now private German citizens, return to their old French garrison in search of the old friends they made there. Written by Camel13

Quotes

[the British have just invaded occupied France. As General Von Klinkerhoffen is surrendering to the British Commander, he notices Lieutenant Gruber and Colonel Von Strohm trying to escape, dressed as British airmen]
General Erich von Klinkerhoffen: [in German] Impersonating British Airmen! This may well be held against you!
Lieutenant Hubert Gruber: [feigning a British accent] Sorry, old boy, don't speak a word of the lingo!
General Erich von Klinkerhoffen: Nice try.

A fitting end to a superb comic series
24 September 2018 | by seivadchSee all my reviews

Most of the last series of Allo Allo fell well short of the others. The change of actor for Herr Flick being a total disaster. However (with hindsight) it seems almost as if it was only made to lead up to this final chapter. This episode it split in time, the first half tidying up all the comic loose ends as Cafe Rene is liberated.

Then in the second half we see the view from many years later as Gruber, Helga and Eric return to Cafe Rene to meet again with Rene, Edith, Yvette and Mimi.

This has happened repeatedly since 1945. There are countless accounts in books, films and TV shows, of former combatants from WW2 meeting and finding out they were just ordinary people, doing the same job, with the same hopes and fears, caught up in something beyond their control. Even now their children and grandchildren continue to meet old, and new, friends.

Having cried with laughter for 9 series, reality finally reached Cafe Rene, and yes I still cried.
