Storyline

Kiryu Kazuma was brought up in the Sunflower Orphanage, and has been protected since his childhood by a lieutenant of the Dojima Family, affiliated with the Tokyo-based Tojo Clan of the Japanese organized crime syndicate, the yakuza. His back covered with a tattoo of a dragon, Kazuma soon becomes a prominent member of the Dojima Family - until he takes the blame for the murder of its leader in order to protect his best friend, and is sent to prison. Ten years later, Kazuma returns to his home town Kamurocho. He finds out that Yumi Sawamura, a young woman he grew up with in the orphanage, has disappeared. Ten billion yen has been stolen from the Tojo Clan, and various yakuza groups are searching for the money everywhere. Against his will, Kazuma becomes involved again in the struggles and intrigues of the yakuza world.

Mechanically flawed otherwise perfect
5 October 2016 | by EddieHimself1See all my reviews

This game (and in fact the whole series) is utterly addictive. I never get bored of beating the crap out of arrogant street punks who thought they could pick a fight with you, not to mention the completely ridiculous heat moves you can drop on people, as well as simply being in awe of Kazuma's incredible physicality. This game definitely has a bit of a Marmite thing going on: a lot of people who played it thought that it was just a bad GTA clone because they were expecting the Japanese equivalent of San Andreas, whilst people like me absolutely can't get enough of it. The real key to understanding this game is to realize that it was never trying to be GTA; it's more like an open-world JRPG-type game but with fighter game mechanics. If you dig that, then you will seriously dig this game and the rest of the series.

As I say, this first title is mechanically flawed: the targeting system often makes it difficult to fight big groups of enemies that have surrounded you, and the camera angles as you walk through the town can be annoying, as well as having to wait for each area to load. Also, I do find the English voice-overs to be a little cheesy. I find the Japanese voice acting on all the other games to be a lot more authentic, not to mention Takaya Kuroda (Kiryu) is just an amazing voice actor (No disrespect to Darryl though). Buy this game. If you like it, you will definitely love the rest of the series, which is the same winning formula as this game, but just keeps getting better and better with every new title.
