Death Note Producer On Whitewashing Criticism: It’s An “Interpretation Of The Story In A Different Culture”

What’s the one thing Ghost in the Shell, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist and Netflix’s forthcoming Death Note adaptation have in common? Barring the fantastical story elements and built-in fanbases, all four high-profile productions have been accused of whitewashing major characters, which has led many to call Hollywood’s representation of Asian people into question.

And so, after the casting of Danny Rand and The Major (Aka Motoko Kusanagi) fuelled heated debate online, the Internet’s eye of scrutiny has turned toward Death Note after Nat Wolff landed the role of Light Yagami in the morbid Netflix original. Because of the IP’s Japanese roots, many consider the decision to go with Wolff in lieu of an Asian actor to be in poor taste – or worse, overtly racist – but seasoned producer Roy Lee firmly believes that Netflix’s star-studded rendition of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s iconic manga

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 episode 1 review: Meet The New Boss

Marc Buxton Sep 28, 2016

Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. gets spooky as we meet the team’s new boss - a heroic blast from Marvel’s past...

This review contains spoilers.

4.1 Meet The New Boss

I’ve been recapping Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for Den Of Geek Us since the premiere. To be honest, while I still enjoyed the series immensely last year, it was kind of a chore (I know, first world nerd problems). Every episode was pretty much the same. Inhumans machinations and intrigue and Hydra, Hydra, Hydra. The show was enjoyable, but it was rather hard to write about. Maybe that’s why I’m really enjoying this new direction Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is taking. The focus on the supernatural and the rebuilding of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a post-Civil War world has brought a new lease of life to Marvel’s inaugural TV series.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Set Photos Show Off The Hero’s New Suit

Filming on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming continues full steam ahead this week, as set photos and videos continue to make their way online. While we’ve still yet to see an official image from the upcoming movie, we have seen a healthy amount of leaked set footage, and this latest batch has managed to whet our appetites for Spidey’s next adventure yet again.

While they don’t reveal anything particularly exciting, we do get a great look at the hero’s costume, which is new and improved thanks to Tony Stark. We also see star Tom Holland swinging around New York and hanging out on set, but as usual, the context of the scene being filmed is unknown.

There’s not much else of note here, but you can check it all out for yourself below and decide if it’s worthy of any attention:

Take A Close Up Look At The Wall-Crawler's Suit In Spider-man: Homecoming In New Set Photos And Video

Amazingly, Marvel Studios has yet to release so much as a single official image from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Chances are that they want to keep the focus on Doctor Strange and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer, but with the reboot set to be released next July, something from it will surely be with us before Christmas. For now though, we do at least have set photos and videos! These come from Queens in New York, but what exactly is going on is hard to say. In the detailed photos from Just Jared, the hero appears to be spending some time in the suburbs. The set videos meanwhile show the wall-crawler chomping on an apple and chatting on the phone before he swings away. With shooting in the city ongoing, expect more content like this to keep on coming this week. Tom Holland walked around the #SpiderMan set

Marvel releases new IMAX trailer and character posters for Doctor Strange

  • JoBlo
I'm looking forward to Doctor Strange. Mainly because it looks, well, strange. While I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe as much as the next sweaty nerd, there can sometimes be a "samey" quality to the various films (which is why I think Guardians Of The Galaxy and Winter Soldier stick out, since they have a comparatively different look and tone from... Favreau Talks Spider-man: Homecoming And Staying In The Marvel Family As Happy Hogan

  • LRM Online
I've said this before, but it bears repeating: Jon Favreau's contribution to the modern superhero boom goes vastly understated.

With 2008's Iron Man, Favreau delivered a movie that would serve as the perfect foundation for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. When Doctor Strange comes out on November 4th, it'll be the fourteenth film set in the world that Favreau helped launch.

He may get a lot of flack for what many consider to be one of the Marvel saga's weak points, Iron Man 2, but we must remember that a big part of the reason for that film's issues were the number of cooks in the kitchen. In fact, one could argue that the meddling by Marvel executives- forcing him to lay too much groundwork for The Avengers- was why Favreau stepped away and made a little gem called Chef, about a cook finding his groove again.

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Justice League, Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Gotham, The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, The Lego Batman Movie, Batman: The Animated Series, Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Spawn, Youngblood, Monkey Master…

We’ll start things off with the DC Extended Universe this week, with Time-Warner chief Jeff Bewkes speaking about the DC Films slate during an investor conference call, admitting that there is “a little room for improvement” on the creative side of things, which is something they are addressing: “[Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad] were very successful in the strategic aims and the financial aims that we have for them. The reboot of Batman with Ben Affleck was a big success. We can do

Disney’s Bob Iger reveals that discussions are underway for the next decade of Marvel movies

With Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe laid out through to the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4 in May 2019, it seems that discussions are now underway for the fourth phase of the Marvel’s superhero movie slate, with Disney CEO Bob Iger revealing that they are beginning to map out the next decade of releases.

“We had a meeting with Marvel a week-and-a-half ago to plot [those films] out, where we’ve got movies in either development or production — some nearing completion — through the end of this decade,” said Iger during an investor conference call this week. “We are beginning to talk about what do we do the next decade, and so on.”

Iger’s comments echo those he made about Lucasfilm, where he announced that plans are afoot for future instalments of the Star Wars saga from 2021 and beyond.

Presumably, Phase Four will see a shift in focus from some of the original Avengers,

More From Joe And Anthony Russo On Civil War's Fallout Heading Into Infinity War

Kicking off Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Civil War left the Avengers fractured, with much of the team scattered to the four corners of the Earth.  It's unlikely (although admittedly possible) that any of the films set between Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War (Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok or Black Panther), will reunite the full team. As such, Thanos' attack on the planet will come at a time when Earth's Mightiest Heroes are at their weakest.  In terms of picking a winner and loser in the battle between Team Iron Man and Team Cap, the Russo's answer (via Quora) implies that there's still more warfare to come.  "We always thought of this movie as the start of the war. It's not over yet." As far as the Russo's favored Avenger is concerned, it seems he has a difficult road ahead.
