Dean goes to the crossroad in Greenwood, Mississippi, and summons the demon for a deal to bring Sam back. Having luckily survived the fire in the roadhouse, Ellen finds the Winchester brothers and Bobby, and delivers the documents Ash left in the safe. They find that Samuel Colt built a huge Devil's Trap in Wyoming which guards a gate to hell, while the Yellow-Eyed Demon gives the Colt to Jake to open the gate.

This is the first season finale to feature the song "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas. It was previously used over the original montage of 1.21 "Salvation" (though on Netflix that particular instance of the song's usage had to be replaced due to licensing issues). The song has gone on to be used at the beginning of every season finale since then, and has come to be regarded by fans as an unofficial theme song for the show. See more

You saved my life over and over. Man you sacrifice everything for me, don't you think I'd do the same for you? You're my big brother, there's nothing I wouldn't do for you. And I don't care, I'm going to get you out of this. I'm going to save your ass for a change.
