Thanks to a stolen helicopter, lifer Bill Rinker is able to escape from a prison work detail. However, he suffers a serious gunshot wound and needs prompt medical attention to survive. Rinker and his accomplices land at a deserted farmhouse, then abduct a local doctor and murder a local druggist. However, the reports of the druggist's murder and the doctor's abduction help Dan Mathews and his officers to narrow the area of their search. They use the Highway Patrol helicopter to comb the area and ultimately spot the farmhouse. Rinker and his two accomplices are able to get to their stolen copter and take off, but they find themselves unable to evade the Highway Patrol helicopter and hesitant to land because of the phalanx of officers they know will be waiting on the ground.
