Trivia

Tab Hunter is featured prominently in the film. He sings the song "Young Love", he's the cover boy on the magazine Dawn purchases at the filling station and the interview she reads references real articles written about him during the time period. The articles in these publications were often embellished or completely fabricated without his knowledge or consent to enhance his appeal to teenage girls, falsifying quotes about the qualities he looked for in a potential girlfriend. In reality, Tab Hunter was gay. See more »

Rose McGowan's haunting new side
22 July 2015 | by lee_eisenbergSee all my reviews

Rose McGowan first got noticed when she played Neve Campbell's friend in Wes Craven's "Scream". She's starred in a few movies since then, and now moves behind the camera. The haunting "Dawn" looks at a teenage girl living in a sheltered household in the 1950s and hoping to break out of this squeaky clean existence.

It's worth noting that this is anything but a nostalgia piece. There are some unpleasant scenes. One might interpret the movie as questioning the image of the nuclear family. McGowan shows herself to be a competent director with this movie. I not only hope that people see it, but also that people pay attention to McGowan's discussions of continuing chauvinism in entertainment.
