Miami star defense lawyer Derek Powell's yacht is attacked during a party, his partner Nadine Alcott is fatally shot. The stolen jewels are all found in the thief's speedboat, which is found with city contractor Ken Taber. Only Powell's notebook remains missing. It contains no major court case data, but a copy of Eric Delco's Cuban birth certificate. Horatio manages to plant a hit-woman and finds out that Russian mobster Gregor Kasparov has a contract on Eric's head. The team must solve opportunity and motives, including that of Eric's DNA-proved relative Alexander Sharova.

Although underwater assault rifles firing drag-stabilized projectiles do exist, it is impossible to aim a shot out of the water at a target on land (or, like here, on a boat). With a choppy sea surface, you probably couldn't even see the target, but if you could, you'd need to compensate your point of aim for the light refraction at the water's surface, the strongly curved trajectory of the projectile and possibly also for disturbance of the projectile when it leaves the water.
