Trivia

For years, Peter Dinklage had indicated in interviews that a Hervé Villechaize biopic was a long-time passion project of him. Like Dinklage, Villechaize had a form of dwarfism, and his short stature made it hard for him to find work without being typecast; something Dinklage was finally able to overcome due to the wide range of the artistic qualities that express his work as a great actor that he is, which also includes his contribution to the huge success of Game of Thrones (2011). Dornan and Dinklage give powerful performances in this HBO biopic
22 October 2018 | by citimetsSee all my reviews

In this biopic by writer and director, Sacha Gervasi, Gervasi tells his real life story of his night with former movie star, Hervé Villechaize. Jamie Dornan plays recovering alcoholic Daniel Tate, (who is based on writer/director Sacha Gervasi) who works as a writer. Dornan is sent to interview and write an article on the famous Gore Vidal, as well as a side interview with has been Star Hervé Villechaize, played by a brilliant Peter Dinklage. Before meeting with Gore Vidal, Tate decides to meet with Hervé for a quick interview, which soon turns into more than Tate intended for. Villechaize tells Tate he has a story for him that will make him known, much to Tate's disbelief. After Hervé tries to keep Tate to stay, Tate bursts out to meet up with Gore Vidal, when Tate arrives to meet Vidal, Vidal is already seated and waiting much to his displeasure. Vidal walks out and Tate is very disappointed. After the failed interview with Vidal, Tate decides to go out with Hervé and give his story a chance. Over the course of the night, Villechaize tells Tate his life story from his early struggles growing up, to his success on Fantasy Island, and The Man with the Golden Gun, and ultimately his downfall of his career. The film provides some heartfelt scenes between Dornan and Dinklage. Both actors keep viewers engaged throughout the film which can sometimes fall a little flat. All in all, My Dinner with Hervé is a fun and sometimes very sad look inside the lives of Actor Hervé Villechaize, and writer Daniel Tate, with powerful performances by Jamie Dornan, and Peter Dinklage.
