George Hazard and Orry Main are for two opposite sides of a Civil War, that has just started. But for twenty years they have been the best friends ever (see: North and South, Book I (1985)). So, when they get in trouble, they can still count on each other. While, the men are fighting, women must take care of their houses. But not all the people are good and honest. Elkanah Bent, a big enemy of George and Orry, with help from Orry's sister; Ashton, smuggle precious goods from Europe. George's brother and sister-in-law want to become rich from the war. Times get harder and harder. Will the war ever end? What influence is it going to make on the Hazards, the Mains and the nation?

Tom Carter, the drummer boy who joined the 1st US Sharpshooters under Col. Hiram Berdan, was based upon the real-life John Clem, a drummer boy who joined the 22nd Michigan Infantry at the age of 10, and became the youngest Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in US military history, when he was promoted to Sergeant at the age of 12 in 1863, for bravery at the Battle of Chickamauga. Clem retired from the US Army in 1915 as a Brigadier General, the last Civil War veteran to retire from the Army, and was promoted to Major General by a special act of Congress in 1916. Clem passed away in 1937 at the age of 85, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. See more
The map on the wall in Lincoln's war room have Union troops denoted as American flags with 41 stars. At the time of the First Battle of Bull Run at Manassas, 21 July 1861, there were only 34 stars on the Union flag. At no time in its evolution have there ever been 41 stars on the US flag. See more
