The Contemporary Cardinal's Supper
20 October 2010 | by claudio_carvalhoSee all my reviews

The theatre director Antonio (Domingos de Oliveira) and the cardiologist Ulisses (Aderbal Freire Filho) travel to Petrópolis to spend the weekend in the mansion of their wealthy friend David Weisman (Paulo José). The trio is near seventy and they are friends since they were in the elementary school, when they performed the cardinals of the play "The Cardinal's Supper". Along the day and the night, they recall their present and past loves and personal dramas.

"Juventude" is a theatrical low-budget film of Domingos de Oliveira based on the play "The Cardinal's Supper" of Júlio Dantas. The story of long-term friendship and recollections in seniority is realistic and spontaneous; shot in digital, there are dialogs hard to understand due to the terrible speech of Domingos de Oliveira and deficiency in the sound. Unfortunately, the recollections are not engaging and most of the lines of Domingo de Oliveira seem to be intended to satisfy his own ego, like the description of his romance with the younger Pink and Eugênia. My vote is five.

Title (Brazil): "Juventude" ("Youth")
