Why These 5 Memorable Lion King Scenes Need to Make It Into the Live-Action Reboot

Everybody look left and everybody look right, because these original Lion King scenes better not be missing from the 2019 live-action reboot. As someone who grew up watching classic Disney films like Cinderella, Aladdin, Snow White, Tarzan, The Jungle Book, and of course, The Lion King, I can't help but hold these live-action remakes to a certain standard of accuracy.

Don't get me wrong - seeing what all of the Disney princesses' jewels and outfits look like in real life is pretty much a dream come true, and seeing an actual shirtless Aladdin is something else. Sometimes, though, the realism of it all can be a bit much compared the the cute cartoons.

Still, as long as Simba's story sticks true to the one my 3-year-old self first fell in love with, then there's no way I can really be disappointed. As Rafiki would say, "Change is good." Plus, Beyoncé is in it,

‘Men In Black: International’ Zaps $74M Overseas; ‘Aladdin’ Tops $700M WW – International Box Office

  • Deadline
Update, Writethru: Sony’s Men In Black: International performed in line with pre-weekend industry projections, landing $73.7M at the international box office. Added to domestic’s fizzle, the global launch crossed the century mark with $102.2M. Offshore tracking is on par with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 19% behind Men In Black 3 in like-for-likes and at current exchange rates.

There were No. 1s in 36 out of 56 markets, including China which led all play. The start there, however, is below the $30M most were seeing pre-release. Poor word of mouth and social scores led to a $26.3M three-day bow. Reviews aggregator Douban gave it a 5.8 while ticketing platform Maoyan chimed in with a 7.4. MIB4 is presented by Columbia Pictures with co-financing from Middle Kingdom behemoth Tencent and previous Mib partner Hemisphere Media Capital.

Industry finance sources tell us a final worldwide box office of about $300M will trigger ancillaries for a break-even result.

Cinderella

After five years of combining animated short subjects, and a combo live-action/animation feature, Disney dove into full feature animation fantasy again with the most basic of Fairy Tales. Just because he learned to create animation for a price doesn’t mean that the quality slacked off — the wondrous design and animation is augmented by terrific songs. Yes, half the picture is about cute mice and birds and other critters … which are done so well, the show is worth seeing multiple times. This handsome Signature Collection release follows earlier Diamond and Platinum releases … and don’t ask me to decode that classification system.

Elizabeth Debicki Talks About Being Supported by Other Women in Hollywood
Elizabeth Debicki is looking to the future — which makes sense, since she was named Women in Film and Max Mara’s “Face of the Future” for 2019.

“No pressure,” Debicki laughed when Variety asked the actress about the honor on the red carpet. “It means a great deal. I have always deeply respected the work that they do. I think they’ve always been incredibly progressive and really ahead of the curve in terms of pushing for female equality and they’re amazing women. These are really women who are making change in the industry.”

Paul Wesley to Lead Tell Me A Story Season 2 on CBS All Access

This is terrific news!

Paul Wesley did some of his best work on Tell Me A Story Season 1 as one of the "three pigs" in an allegory of Three Little Pigs that intertwined with Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel.

Wesley's Eddie Longo was a low-level thief who got messed up in a bad situation that left him vulnerable and in way over his head. As you can read in my reviews of the season, his performance was riveting.

Created by Kevin Williamson, Tell Me A Story takes the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller.

Exploring a whole new set of fairy tales and characters each season, season two of the series will feature the tales of three legendary princesses – Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella – like you’ve never seen them before.

Disney’s Aladdin passes $500 million worldwide

Disney’s Dumbo may not have set the box office alight, but the House of Mouse is enjoying more success with its second live-action remake of the year, with the Guy Ritchie-directed Aladdin taking its box office haul beyond the $500 million mark this week.

The film – which stars Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Will Smith as Aladdin, Jasmine and the Genie – had grossed $203.1 million in North America by close of play on Wednesday, making it the third biggest release of the year so far after Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel.

Aladdin is the sixth of Disney’s animated remakes to pass the half billion dollar mark, and should go on to overtake 2015’s Cinderella ($543.5 million) to claim fifth place. That position will be short-lived however, with next month’s The Lion King on course for a whopping $230 million opening weekend in North America alone.

'Secret Life of Pets 2' and 'Dark Phoenix' Look to Lead Weekend Box Office
The 2019 yearly box office continues to improve, currently closing the year-to-year gap to a -7.5% difference after a strong week that began with Godzilla: King of the Monsters topping the weekend box office, but it has been Disney's Aladdin that is making the most waves lately, surpassing $500 million globally today while moving ahead of Godzilla as the week's top performing title. This weekend will continue the trend with a top twelve that should threaten a combined $175 million, well ahead of the same weekend last year, led by new releases in Universal's The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Fox's final chapter in their X-Men franchise, Dark Phoenix. At the top of this weekend's box office look for Universal's latest animated collaboration with Illumination, The Secret Life of Pets 2, to deliver a $50+ million performance, which is well behind the $104 million debut for the original.
