Convicted serial rapist Paul Darnell is released on parole and, three months later, young Ashanti Walker, who lives in the same area as Darnell, is killed after sex. He is the perfect parolee with a loyal girl-friend but he has no alibi and Steel is convinced he is the murderer. He is arrested but his barrister claims persecution and,at his trial, is credible and sympathetic whilst Steel does himself no favors with his bigotry and zeal, with obvious results. However, that is not the end of the matter.
DS Devlin and DS Brooks investigate the murder of Ashanti Walker, age 16, who is found naked and strangled in her bed. The forensic evidence shows that she had sex prior to being killed but it's not obvious that she had been raped. Using a profile of the murder, the police focus on Paul Darnell who had been convicted of several rapes and has now been out of prison on parole for three months. James Steel had originally prosecuted him and even spoke against Darnell's release. They have circumstantial evidence that puts Darnell in the area of Ashanti's home and they proceed with a new prosecution. For his part, Darnell insists that he is not he man he was and has been rehabilitated. He now has a girlfriend, Judy Johnston and she too testifies as to his rehabilitation. Steele is convinced of Darnell's guilt and doesn't hesitate to say so publicly.
