Jane and Maura's plan to run in the Massachusetts marathon is interrupted when they reach the 3 mile mark and find another runner collapsed on the road. They quickly determine that the man was shot but Jane is concerned that it not become widely known as it might induce panic among the half million spectators along the course. When a second man is shot at the 12 mile point, they realize the killer is likely a runner. Working with Frost and Korsak who are back at the office, they learn that the two men went to high school together. They also learn that the they, along with a third student, had gotten away with a vicious rape. Someone is clearly out for revenge and the police have to move quickly when they learn the third man is also among the runners.

They quickly determine that they have a regular, targeted murder on their hands, and someone mentions the fact that the best place for a terrorist attack would be at the start or finish lines to maximize casualties.
Sadly, the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing did feature bombs detonated near the finish line. Since this episode aired almost three years before the real-life bombing, it's possible that the bombers could have gotten the idea for their plot from the show. See more
