Review: Oberon #1

You might already know that Aftershock Comics is on a roll. In just three years, they’ve won Diamond’s Publisher of the Year award (for publishers under a certain market share) and have pushed several properties forward to media deals. It’s a publisher that seems to attract smart talent and then provides the support and freedom to create strong work.

Aftershock Comics’ tagline is “The Year of Reading Dangerously.” That has the sense of urgency and the zing that the entire industry needs. In fact, I’ve been hearing John Siuntres talk about Aftershock on his excellent Word Balloon podcast (Aftershock is a sponsor). An interview with creator of Moth & Whisper inspired me to pick up a series I probably wouldn’t have otherwise, in fact.

One of Aftershock’s most recent debuts was Oberon #1. The king of the fairies, Oberon, may be best known for his role

Hot on the heels of Halloween, Hereford Films, the indie outfit behind this year’s kirlian photography chiller Aura (aka The Exorcism of Karen Walker), has given a first glimpse at stills from their upcoming supernatural horror Pentagram, which is set for release in 2019.

Written and directed by Steve Lawson (Aura) and based on an idea by Matthew McGuchan (LD50: Lethal Dose starring Tom Hardy), Pentagram draws its inspiration from Hammer’s beloved Dennis Wheatley adaptations The Devil Rides Out and To The Devil… A Daughter, as four young people find themselves trapped within a mystic chalk pentagram at an abandoned house in the middle of the night. As well as being a prison for the group, the pentagram is their only protection from a demonic entity that stalks from the shadows.

With a strong cast of young talent including Chloe Farnworth (Sinbad and the War

Asian Distributor Tangren Cultural Film Turns 20

  • Variety
So far in its short history, Tangren Cultural Film is little known outside the specialty film corner of its Australian home base. But splashy branding, useful give-aways, and an events program at the American Film Market in Santa Monica are aimed at quickly raising its profile.

That is in keeping with the leap to another level that Tangren is already engineering in Australasia and which it is planning next to take to North America.

The company was established last year in Australia, and initially operated as a marketing partner on Chinese movies acquired and released by other companies. Tangren’s unique selling point was its connection between advertisers and the diaspora populations of ethnic Chinese in Australian cities.

After getting its feet on the ground, Tangren took the decision to acquire rights on its own account and — after Madman Entertainment handled its first two titles — to operate as a distributor in its own right.
