Ten Best: Indie horrors to watch on TheHorrorShow.TV

  • Nerdly
We’re just over a month away from Halloween and there are no less than four major UK horror festivals on the horizon, so what better time to take a look at you choice of “home video” horror – with ten of the best independent horror movies to rent or buy on TheHorrorShow.TV

The Top 10, in no particular order, are…

Camp Dread

Mixing the slasher movie with reality TV doesn’t seem like the best idea for horror movie, especially considering the mainstream backlash against both genres, but surprisingly Camp Dread manages to overcome it’s much-maligned origins. Of course any slasher movie set at a summer camp is going to be filled with the tropes of the genre and this film is no different – although this time around the stereotypes and cliches which would typically hinder such a production actually work in its favour. By embracing what made the

‘Varsity Blood’ Review

Stars: Lexi Giovagnoli, Wesley Scott, Debbie Rochon, Natalie Peyton, Blair Jackson, Elyse Bigler, Melody Herron, Jesse Ferraro, Kiarra Hogan, Chris Hlozek, Payton Wood, Fabian Watkins, Elle Lamont | Written and Directed by Jake Helgren

Quick question. This is 2014 right? You wouldn’t guess that from watching Varsity Blood!

It would seem that the trend for producing horror movies that harken back to the 80s and the golden age of the slasher, has officially become the “norm” for modern examples of the genre. Every month there seems to be another slasher movie that hits DVD and/or VOD which looks and feels like the self-referential post-Scream years never happened. But I’m not complaining, oh no! As a Huge fan of slasher movies (even the likes of Iced and Terror at Tenkiller) I relish the opportunity to watch each and every new entry into the much-maligned genre.

Thankfully the quality of modern slashers has,

Indie Spotlight

We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes a trailer and release details for Sledge, Cam2Cam, and Night Guards, a review of Hungerford, plus more below:

Sledge Trailer and Release Date Announced: “He didn’t drown. He didn’t burn. He’s just a psychopath with a sledgehammer.

Sledge, a ‘bloody’ good horror-comedy in the tradition of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Shaun of the Dead, premieres on VOD September 2nd and DVD on October 7th.

A spoof of the horror genre, and littered with nods and references to fright flicks of yesteryear, the film fixes on a psychopath who not only believes he’s in a movie and video game but that he’s the hero of this story.

Sledge is a horror comedy that takes a loving poke to the horror classics we

Varsity Blood Finger Puppet Horror Theater

Coming out next Tuesday on DVD via Rlj / Image Entertainment is a new film called Varsity Blood. In preparation for the release, a team got together to reenact a scene using puppets. Poor felt.

After the big Halloween football match, the students are joined by an uninvited guest dressed as their high school mascot armed with a bow and arrow, a battle-axe, and an insatiable appetite for butchery. Soon, they find themselves fighting for more than the winning score as terror becomes the name of the game. Featuring “enough inventive kills to keep even the most rabid gorehound happy,” Varsity Blood is “a supremely entertaining slasher rollercoaster” (Hysteria Lives!).

Three years earlier Billy Corbin died trapped in a fiery storeroom. Now the ones who let him burn are attending their school homecoming party and it could be their last. It’s payback time without pity for the young, the foolish and the beautiful. One by one they disappear, each meeting a gory, terrifying end. The corridors of Winston High are dark, slippery and wet with the blood of those who came before.

First off, you’re probably all aware of just how much I love slasher movies. If I have one particular genre love (behind 80s teen flicks I might add) it’s 80s slashers. I could never get enough

Do Not Mark Your Calendar for this Bloody Homecoming: A Movie Review

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of his film was provided by Rlj Entertainment. Director: Brian C. Weed. Writer: Jake Helgren. Cast: Jim Tavaré, Rae Latt, Lexi Giovagnoli and Alex Dobrenko. Brian C. Weed's first film as director is a lackluster effort titled Bloody Homecoming. Jake Helgren's script follows plotlines from the '80s, with Bloody Homecoming providing a conventional slasher film. But, this is no Prom Night (2008) or My Bloody Valentine (2009). Instead, this indie outing is a weak venture, with some really awkward scenes. The actors in this film are amateurs. As well, this revenge tale rarely shines. More blood reds were needed. The film is a straightforward revenge thriller. But, fans might be wondering about the killer's motivations. Though, few horror fans would be able to make it to the end of this film. Through the film's long ninety minutes, several high schoolers deal with disappearing friends,

Slasher Film Bloody Homecoming is Arriving at a Teen Dance Near You

Tagline: "Come home to terror!" A trailer for Brian C. Weed's Bloody Homecoming was released early in 2012. Now, the film has been picked up by distributors Image Entertainment for a 2013 release. The film offers some similarities to Patrick Lussier's 2009 remake of My Bloody Valentine. In the story, a figure looms about a high school dance. Dressed and hidden in a fireman's suit, this character terrorizes several teens. This killer is motivated by revenge and few will survive, when the axe falls. Both My Bloody Valentine and Bloody Homecoming offer similar titles and costumes. This latest film hides a killer behind a mask, similar to the 2009 film. And, the victims in both films target teenagers. Horror fans will not have to wait long to see how Weed and writer Jake Helgren have paid homage to previous slasher films and filmites can preview Bloody Homecoming with the film's poster here and a trailer,
