Wild Cards originated as a private setting created by George R. R. Martin and friends for there Superworld pen and paper role playing game. They later adapted the play sessions into stories, modify them to make them more like book stories, and publish them (it was helpful that most of the players were writers themselves). On a related note, the popularity of the Wild Cards books lead to a role playing suppliment for Steve Jackson's GURPS system, then later an original role playing game book. See more
