It has been a long time since I’ve reviewed a direct-to-market Steven Seagal movie, in fact its been some time since I’ve so much as watched one for my own “pleasure”. I skipped over Sniper: Special Ops, Asian Connection, Code of Honour, and the most recent Dtv release End of a Gun, maily because after buying, watching, and often reviewing, every single film starring Seagal until the aforementioned I was suffering from Seagal burnout… A condition that often comes about in an audience when they realise that the once-agile former martial arts superstar has succumbed to appearing in extended cameos in the hopes that long-suffering fans – like myself – will buy the film on his name

Set phrases to stun: why Benedict Cumberbatch should be given every classic movie line | Joe Queenan

If you’ve got a zinger in your film, it helps to have a powerhouse speaker, like Ving Rhames, to deliver it. But failing that, there’s a breed of magnificently inappropriate actor who can inject fun into anything

In the unjustly neglected 2013 direct-to-the-abyss gangster film Force of Execution, Ving Rhames mouths these memorable words: “Look, I don’t know what the fuck happened to you. But I’m the big dog here now. And my bite is far worse than your bite would ever be. You know all that karate shit, that shit is cool, but we six-oh. We put one to the dome. You feelin’ me?”

It is quite a mouthful. Playing an ambitious crime underboss bucking for a promotion, Rhames warns a young thug who possesses impressive martial arts skills that even the most complete mastery of karate and tai chi and aikido and kung fu will

This time round Seagal stars as contract killer John Alexander (not to be confused with contract killer/mercenary John Seeger from Seagal’s 2006 offering Mercenary For Justice) who – after fulfilling his latest mission to take out an arms dealer – encounters a girl on the run

The Mercenary: Absolution Review

Director: Keoni Waxman

Cast: Steven Seagal, Byron Mann, Vinnie Jones, Josh Barnett, Adina Stetcu,

Run Time: 91 minutes

Certificate: 18

Action star and aikido master Steven Seagal returns to our screens in The Mercenary: Absolution, reuniting him with director Keoni Waxman (A Good Man, Force Of Execution) for another tale of crime and retribution.

While awaiting extraction from a job, veteran contract killer John Alexander (Steven Seagal) and his protégé Chi (Byron Mann) save damsel in distress Nadia (Adina Stetcu) from a group of thugs. A sadistic mob boss (Vinnie Jones) with powerful political connections begins hunting them, forcing John to choose between protecting the girl or remaining loyal to the government agency that hired him for their mission.

Some of Seagal’s recent outings have received criticism for their nonsensical narratives but this couldn’t be said about Absolution, with the plot a straightforward, somewhat basic affair. Despite this, it manages

Steven Seagal blasts Liam Neeson: "He's not an action movie guy"

Steven Seagal blasts Liam Neeson:
Steven Seagal has criticised Liam Neeson, saying that the Taken star is not a proper action hero.

Martial-artist-turned-Hollywood-star Seagal, whose credits include Under Siege and the recent Force of Execution, suggested that the Oscar-nominated Schindler's List actor wasn't "a great warrior".

Speaking to The Big Issue, Seagal said that Neeson was lucky to be getting so much work in action roles.

"He can't fight, he's not an action movie guy at all and he's getting action movies now so that should tell you something," Seagal commented.

"He's a great dramatic actor. Is he an action guy? No. Is he a great fighter, a great warrior? No. Let's be honest."

Seagal also lamented the demise of the more traditional action movie, adding that visual effects had levelled the playing field for the genre.

"There are a lot of different methods of making movies now. They use a lot of special effects,

DVD Review - Force of Execution (2013)

Force of Execution, 2013.

Directed by Keoni Waxman.

Starring Steven Seagal, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo and Bren Foster.

Synopsis:

Alexander Coates' (Seagal) criminal empire has been good to him - and devastating to his enemies - until his number one hit man, Roman Hurst, messes up what should have been a routine hit. Alexander spares his protege's life but cripples his hands, thus 'retiring' Hurst forever. Before long, though, Alexander realizes that he'll need Hurst's help one last time when Iceman, a ruthless killer, surfaces.

Steven Seagal returns with another cinematic (or straight to video) opus. In the last decade a new Seagal film would appear with great frequency. Sometimes, three or four a year would pop up in (wipes away a tear) Blockbusters. Seagal moved into TV a few years back with his reality show Lawman, as well as his fictional cop show, True Justice.

In the U.K, True Justice

‘Force of Execution’ Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Steven Seagal, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Bren Foster | Written by Richard Beattie, Michael Black | Directed by Keoni Waxman

Steven Seagal has never been a big name in action movies for me. I’ve seen the popular ones he’s in such as the Under Siege movies but he never caught my interest like somebody like Jean-Claude Van Damme or Dolph Lundgren. This is probably why when I sat down to review Force of Execution I was more interested to see Danny Trejo’s name appear than Seagal, though even that is not a seal of quality.

In Force of Execution Steven Seagal plays Thomas Douglas a crime lord who has a desire to retire and get out of the life of crime. At the same time Ice Man (Ving Rhames) is looking to make his mark on the criminal underworld and take what Douglas has built. As Ice Man makes his move,

New DVD Blu-ray: 'Elysium,' 'Prisoners,' 'Predator 3D'

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week

"Ain't Them Bodies Saints"

What's It About? This little Texan indie is part romance and part dramatic thriller. Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster headline this top-notch cast about a man on the run, the woman he loves, and the sheriff who tries to get between them. (Not in a romantic way, just, you know, because he's a man of the law and Affleck's character broke out of jail.)

Why We're In: It's a slow and sweet Sundance favorite, and the Texas weather looks a whole lot hotter than the snow most of us are dealing with every day.

Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week

"Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" (1920) - Deluxe Edition

What's It About? John Barrymore stars as Dr. Jekyll and evil Edward Hyde in this classic silent horror film directed by John S. Robertson. Scientific experiments! Debauchery! Murder!

'Prisoners', 'Lone Ranger', 'Elysium', 'Kick Ass 2' and More on DVD & Blu-ray This Week

Prisoners I still need to set aside the time to watch Prisoners again, but I've been listening to J?hann J?hannsson's score quite regularly as it is undoubtedly one of the year's best. I won't deny Prisoners has a few narrative hiccups that may have made it an otherwise better film, but it's still a good one and one of the best films 2013 has had to offer, especially one of the best studio films. Great performances from Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal and some mean cinematography from Roger Deakins.

The Lone Ranger As much as everyone (myself included) railed on The Lone Ranger and as much as it has been considered the biggest flop of the year, I expect it's a film that will live on on TV and home video and ultimately break even and eventually garner a profit. Once we all get beyond judging it with an extreme critical eye,
