‘Killing Eve,’ Jodie Comer, and Benedict Cumberbatch Triumph at BAFTA TV Awards

‘Killing Eve,’ Jodie Comer, and Benedict Cumberbatch Triumph at BAFTA TV Awards
Phoebe Waller Bridge’s slinky thriller “Killing Eve” made its mark at the BAFTA TV Awards on May 12, taking home three prizes, including drama series, lead actress for Jodie Comer and supporting actress for Fiona Shaw.

Now airing its second season on BBC America, the series centers around a bored spy played by Sandra Oh who gets drawn into a game of cat-and-mouse with Comer’s obsessive contract killer.

The win is a significant boost for Comer, whose performance in Season 1 was often overshadowed by Oh’s, resulting in both a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for the latter.

HBO’s “Succession” also got a boost in its Emmy campaign, taking home the BAFTA for international series, edging out last year’s winner, Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

There were several other familiar faces for American audiences amongst the winners at the BAFTAs, including love for the

‘Killing Eve’ Triumphs at BAFTA TV Awards

  • Variety
BBC America drama “Killing Eve” was the biggest winner Sunday at BAFTA’s British Academy Television Awards, which were handed out at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The hit show took home three trophies, for best drama series, best actress for Jodie Comer and best supporting actress for Fiona Shaw.

The first award of the night saw Sky Atlantic and Showtime’s “Patrick Melrose” beat out strong competition from “A Very English Scandal” to take home the prize for best miniseries. Benedict Cumberbatch claimed the best leading actor prize for his performance in the show, beating competition including Hugh Grant in “A Very English Scandal.” “I’m very used to being the bridesmaid,” said Cumberbatch, who won the award from his seventh BAFTA TV Award nomination. The actor thanked author Edward St. Aubyn for his “wit and courage.”

Grant’s co-star, Ben Whishaw, repeated his Golden Globe success by winning

‘A Very English Scandal’ Leads All Winners at BAFTA TV Craft Awards

BBC drama “A Very English Scandal” was the big winner at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on April 29, scoring three trophies, including costume design, editing (fiction), and director (fiction) for Stephen Frears.

Distributed in the United States by Amazon, the three-part limited series starred Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw and was based on an actual English sex scandal from the 1970s involving a Liberal Member of Parliament named Jeremy Thorpe.

BBC America’s “Killing Eve” and the Sky Atlantic/Showtime miniseries “Patrick Melrose” each took home two awards, with the former winning for original score and sound (fiction) and the latter for production design as well as writer (drama) for David Nicholls.

The wins serve as a feather in the cap for both “Killing Eve” and “A Very English Scandal,” both of which hope to make a splash in the year’s Emmy race.

Trailer: New Horror Movie ‘The Exorcism Of Karen Walker’

Hereford Films has debuted the new trailer for their upcoming horror movie The Exorcism Of Karen Walker which releases next month.

Hereford FIlms

The Exorcism Of Karen Walker is the first film to fully explore the concept of Kirlian photography – a process of photographing a person’s ‘aura’. Accidentally discovered by Semyon Kirlian in 1939, it has been the subject of much myth and speculation ever since. In the film, Diane and Mitch Walker inherit a house once owned by Mitch’s uncle Alexander, who was ostracised from the family after purportedly abusing Mitch’s sister Karen while dabbling with Kirlian photography. Karen has been in a somnambulistic state in an asylum ever since, but Mitch slowly begins to realise that she was not abused: indeed Uncle Alexander was trying to help her as she was possessed by an ancient demon. Enlisting the help of Alexander’s one time colleague, renowned psychic Ada Devere,

The Shivering Truth Review

Adult Swim’s dark, disturbing new anthology series will swallow you whole and reshape your mind. We are not worthy.

TV

“And that’s my message to you: No one cares.”

There's an iconic episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia where the gang is about to put on a risky performance. "Laughs are easy," a character remarks. "I'm going for gasps." There are many shows on Adult Swim that have made me laugh, but The Shivering Truth is one of the extreme few that has made me gasp. It also made me involuntarily moan, "Dear Lord." It made me actually sick to my stomach and groan. It also made me cry a whole bunch. The Shivering Truth is the kind of television that you'd use to break someone's mind and we are so very fortunate to have it in our lives.

It’s upsetting how good this show is.

David Tennant to Star in Disability-Themed Comedy for the BBC
Former “Doctor Who” star David Tennant will play the father of a severely learning-disabled girl in “There She Goes,” a new comedy for the BBC from Sharon Horgan’s production company Merman.

The five-part series will go out on the pubcaster’s BBC Four channel. Tennant and Jessica Hynes (“Shaun of the Dead”) star as Simon and Emily, respectively, the parents of 9-year-old Rosie, played by Miley Locke. Edan Hayhurst appears as Ben, Rosie’s brother.

Merman also won a second-season order for “Motherland,” its comedy about modern parenting and family life.

Inside No. 9 renewed for series 5

Louisa Mellor Feb 6, 2018

BBC Two has renewed its excellent anthology Inside No. 9 for a fifth series. Top work all round...

Inside No. 9 is stunning television. It's ever surprising, clever and inventive, and to judge by its excellent fourth series, which concludes tonight at 10pm on BBC Two, it's only getting better.

Knowing a good thing when it has one, the BBC has renewed the anthology show for a fifth series, six new episodes of which are due to air in 2019. Tremendous news.

The official press bumf promises that series five will "stay true to the show's anthology format, with each episode bringing an original story, a new raft of characters and surprising twists" with yet more top-notch guest stars. Adam Tandy will once again produce.

Here's what series creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith had to say on the renewal:

4.5 And The Winner Is…

“What’s more important, awards or a massive audience?” I asked Inside No. 9’s creators in 2017. Simultaneously, without missing a beat, “Awards!” they answered to a chorus of laughs. “Can’t put an audience on your shelf!” said Pemberton.

However serious that answer, it’s not a stretch to see why TV awards-giving might be ripe for satire here. Inside No. 9 has won a number of prizes (Rose d’Or, Rts, Writers’ Guild, Banff Rockies, comedy.co.uk…), but there’s still a baffling gap where a Bafta might be. It’s a matter of genre, Reece Shearsmith suggested. As a dramatic comedy/comedic drama, Inside No. 9

4.1 Zanzibar

In series one’s The Understudy, Inside No. 9 gave us an updated take on Macbeth. Here, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton put their own twist on Shakespearean comedy with an episode set entirely in a hotel corridor and written entirely in iambic pentameter, the clever sods. Regular brilliance clearly wasn’t presenting these two enough of a challenge.

It’s a challenge they pull off with relish. The writing’s smart and self-aware (“Like this iambic foot, I’m stressed, you’re not”) while the gags are a bawdy delight. Shakespeare never rhymed ‘bum’ with ‘Magnus Magnusson’, but you know he would have done,

“I didn’t come here to make peace. I came here to make trouble.”

This is one of those instances that after a period of intense action, Vikings wisely steps away and takes a moment to breathe as each of the major players reevaluate their individual situations and make plans to strike out in new directions. While the overall intent of the story arcs remains the same, The Plan sets out to remind viewers that these are men and women of action, and once again manages to provide a reasonable amount of attention to each.
