Director Francis Lawrence shared his feelings on the comparisons between Red Sparrow and Black Widow from the Marvel comic books, played in the MCU by Scarlett Johansson: "There's people who think it's very similar to the Black Widow story. This is not pulled from Black Widow, this is pulled from Red Sparrow, you know, it's written by a guy who was in the CIA. It's like, his references are coming from a very, very different place from that. But there'll always be that. People like to put things in boxes, and I think it's a really unique film. This is a thriller, it's not action, again it's not gadgetry. It's a hard-R. There's violence, it's a bit perverse, it's suspenseful, a lot of intrigue. It's a different kind of spy film." See more »

You were dancing for them because they were letting you I mean, you see it now, right? You belong to them pretty much your whole life. So, Dominika, work with me. Make this something that you own for the first time in your life. And make them, make them fucking pay.
What is it you want from me?
Whatever you can give us.

At the distributor's request, the UK version (both in cinemas and on video) is cut for "strong sadistic violence" to earn a 15 certificate instead of an 18. As both countries make up the same distribution region, Ireland also received the same cut version (rated 16 for cinema and 18 on video).
The contentious scene shows Ustinov being strangled:
In the UK version, we only see a brief establishing shot where his hands are covering his throat, cutting right to a close-up of Dominika struggling but completely clean. The censored footage shows the wire cutting into Ustinov's throat for much longer, in more graphic detail after his arms hang loose, and him bleeding on Dominika's chest.
Ustinov collapsing uses an alternate shot in the UK version, and the second close-up of Dominika is digitally bloodless as with the first, but there's still blood on her chest when putting on her clothes as per the uncut version (a continuity error).
The uncut version is roughly 13 seconds longer. See more »
Firstly, this is an amazing film. It stands out in a world full of childish sequels, prequels and bland and boring movies. Finally, a film for adults with action, intrigue, psychological warfare and sex.
I am glad they still make films like this.
Secondly, and this is the good news part or rather second piece of good news, all the Russian hackers and bots whose life is comprised of not doing constructive are not very good. We have proof here. They have flooded this site and others according this film bad reviews, but given their command of 'English' we can spot them so easily and breathe a sigh of relief that they are so obvious. Clearly, Russian motherland defenders (who do nothing to improve their decrepit country all day and instead sit behind their computers 24/7) are pathetic.
Here are examples just from the top page of reviews here:
"Red rate for red movie"
"This is so money waste to watch this."
A reviewer called 'english'_artist writes: "Porn movie or 'spie' movie?"
or how about this: "blatant propaganda in 2018 DansGame "
Dear Russians, put down the vodka bottle, turn off the laptop, step outside and pave a road or repair a bridge. They are all crumbling.
Everyone else, this is an action-packed film in a sea of weekly Marvel films or boring sequels. Watch it.
