Storyline

In The Perfect Summer, fatherless teenager Jake (Adam Horner) is happy living in Chicago, until his mother (Sydney Penny) decides to uproot them to a small surfing town where her estranged father (Eric Roberts), Jake's grandfather, lives. The transition isn't easy for anyone and it seems everywhere he goes, Jake manages to make enemies, including the town bully, Tyler (JD Banks), who doesn't like the new interloper or his interest in young surfing prodigy, Kayla (Katie Garfield). Stuck in the beach town with no friends and no knowledge of surfing, Jake has nowhere to turn until Cody (Jason Castro), the local surf shop owner, reveals that Jake's grandfather is a surf legend. Tired of feeling like an outcast, Jake asks Lou to teach him about surfing. Jake learns to face his fears, push through inhibitions and realizes that winning the respect of his new peers - and Katie's heart - might mean facing the biggest challenge of his life. Trivia

Adam Horner was apparently hard to work with on set. It was told that at times he refused to put on an American accent because he found it difficult, refusal to learn lines and instead wanted to have cue cards to read off, and was often late or didn't show up at all to set. See more »

Nothing to See
10 August 2013 | by chubbydaveSee all my reviews

It's about a single mom who moves from the big city to a small town. Her teenage son for some reason wants to learn to surf. The movie is filled with clichés including some adversity from town bullies, the boy bonding with his grandfather and learning to cope after the death of a loved one, all followed by a very underwhelming climax at the end.

I watched it because it was a surfing movie, but the surfing scenes are pathetic. The surfing scenes in this movie were the worst ever. Pathetic waves and extremely below average surfing. The sea is beautiful, and you can't go wrong with a perfect curl. It doesn't even have to be a Hawaii 5-0 type wave, just the turquoise blue water against a blue sky. But the water was kind of gray, and the cinematography was sophomoric.

The only thing that caused me to give it an extra star was Sydney Penny who I've been in love with ever since High Plains Drifter.
