Richard Linklater did in fact play baseball in his school years. He always remembered how everyone in his team were competitors and would compete at just about anything to prove who was better. A lot of this film is autobiographical like many of his films and just like in this film, he remembered what was great about those days wasn't just about the baseball games but mainly the things he and his team mates got up to.

The credits list Bernie Tiede as the cat wrangler. Bernie Tiede is the real-life subject of a previous Richard Linklater movie called Bernie (2011). In that movie, Bernie kills someone and stores the body in a freezer. In this movie, the one cat that needed wrangling jumped out of the refrigerator when the door was opened.

In one of the Saturday night scenes, there is a punk rock concert where the band play the Gilligan's Island (1964) theme song. This is one of the many links to Dazed and Confused (1993) as in that film while in school they try to list all of the Gilligan's Island (1964) episodes and proceed to have a conversation about it in the restroom.

Similarity to Dazed and Confused (1993): Both films feature a scene in which four characters marvel over a broken paddle in very similar ways. In Dazed and Confused, Pink points out that Benny's shop class paddle has a hairline fraction from an off screen freshman hazing. In Everybody Wants Some!!, Jake points out the split handle of McReynolds' ping pong paddle after he throws it in a rage.
