Creator Monty Oum designed the world map by squirting ketchup on a napkin, scrunching it up and then unfurling it. He then used the shapes the ketchup made as inspiration for the size and shape of the land masses.

Yang Xiao Long is inspired by the fairy tale character of Goldilocks. While her inspiration may not be quite as obvious as the other three main characters, series creator Monty Oum has said that Yang's personality is to jump straight into a situation without thinking, which relates to Goldilocks' story where she enters a strange house to eat food and sleep in a bed without thinking about what would happen when the owners returned.

Team JNPR was originally going to be the "B-team"--their role in the show would have been much smaller and their appearances fewer. The writers soon found that they had written Team JNPR into a much-larger role, as basically the "second A-team" behind Team RWBY. A similar thing happened with the character Velvet; she was at first a throwaway character whose role was simply to demonstrate the prejudice faunus face. Fans fell in love with Velvet and she made more appearances, eventually being made part of team CFVY by the writers.

Because of how Red vs. Blue ended and because the first RWBY trailer was placed right after the credits, many fans assumed RvB had finished. However, this is not the case. In Podcast 191, Monty Oum, Gus Sorola, and Miles Luna all stated that they will be continuing to make Red vs. Blue as long as people are willing to watch it.

Originally, Roman Torchwick was just meant to be a one-shot villain for the first episode. However, the writers enjoyed him so much they had him stay in the series for longer as a recurring villain. Additionally, his sidekick Neo, was created only ten days before her debut episode. Because of how last-minute Neo's inclusion was, there wasn't enough time to cast a voice actor or record lines, so it was decided that she would be mute.
