Perhaps its basis on real-life events goes some of the way in getting it there, but “The Big Sick” is a wonderfully affecting and funny movie, and one of the reasons it works is because of how well it examines its characters, their backgrounds, and their personalities. Romantic comedies are dependent on the strengths of how the characters are developed, and while co-writers Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani may have used autobiographical inspiration in setting the stage, their storytelling talents ensure that the film’s world is thoughtfully realized, richly textured, and fully coherent from start to finish. The Favourite review – Colman, Weisz and Stone are pitch-perfect

Yorgos Lanthimos’s tragicomedy set in the court of Queen Anne boasts daring performances from its three female stars and lashings of lust, intrigue and deceit

A trio of pitch-perfect performances from Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone drive Yorgos Lanthimos’s spiky period drama – a tragicomic tale of personal and political jealousy and intrigue in 18th-century England. Set in the court of Queen Anne (the last of the Stuart monarchs), it balances foreign wars with home-grown tussles in often uproarious and occasionally alarming fashion. Written by Deborah Davis (whose original script dates back to the late 90s) and Tony McNamara, this boasts razor-sharp dialogue which at times reminded me of Whit Stillman’s deliciously acerbic Jane Austen adaptation Love & Friendship – albeit with more sex and swearing.

Rotterdam's co-pro market CineMart unveils 2019 selection

A total of 16 projects selected for Rotterdam industry event.

CineMart, the co-production market held during the International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr), has named the 16 feature projects to be showcased at next year’s edition.

Held January 27-30 during the festival (which runs Jan 23 – Feb 3), the event invites filmmakers to pitch their projects to a host of attending film professionals in tailored one-to-one meetings, as well as presentations that are open to all CineMart guests.

This year’s selection features one returning filmmaker, Nathalie Teirlinck, who previously presented her project Past Imperfect at CineMart in 2015 – that film went on to play

Fans of Yorgos Lanthimos’s past work will know exactly what they’re getting themselves in for here, but for the uninitiated: don’t expect a high-brow regal drama. As pretty much the self-appointed ‘Master of Uncomfortable Black Humour’, Lanthimos seems to regularly go out of his way to make films that are dark, troubling and hilariously slapstick in equal measure, often all at the same time. Revolver Amsterdam Adapting ‘Takeover’ From ‘Department Q’ Writer for TV (Exclusive)

Revolver Amsterdam is working up a 10-part adaptation of “Takeover,” the thriller from Jussi Adler-Olsen, the Nordic crime writer behind the “Department Q” series. Adler-Olsen has sold over 20 million books globally. Several of his “Department Q” books have been successfully adapted for the big screen in the author’s native Denmark.

Dutch director Hanro Smitsman, whose previous credits include Berlin Golden Bear-winning short film “Raak,” is attached and will helm the series. The producers are at Afm with the package to meet with potential partners.

“Takeover” follows a cynical businessman who specializes in bringing down major businesses. He finds himself in hot water when the Syrian intelligence service assigns him to bring down a great a large corporation.

The TV series will be produced by Raymond van der Kaaij and Germen Boelens of Revolver Amsterdam. Jointly, their producer credits include Sundance audience award-winner “I Dream in Another Language,” and “Love & Friendship” by Whit Stillman.

Kate Beckinsale, Jason Sudeikis Part Of Big-Name Ensemble Cast Nearing Deals For Charlie Day’s ‘El Tonto’
Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale, Jason Sudeikis, Edie Falco, John Malkovich and Jillian Bell are closing deals to join Charlie Day’s feature directorial debut El Tonto which starts shooting this month in Los Angeles.

The Armory Films and Metalworks Pictures financed and produced independent follows Day, who also wrote El Tonto, as a mute simpleton who gets off a bus in Los Angeles and by happenstance suddenly rises through the Hollywood scene to become a celebrity, only to then lose it all. Beckinsale will play a Hollywood starlet while Sudeikis will portray a film director who Day’s mute encounters.

John Rickard and his Wrigley Pictures (Rampage) banner is also producing the Hollywood satire with Alex Saks via her Page Fifty-Four Pictures. When I brought up to Whit Tony Zierra's Filmworker, the documentary on Leon Vitali and his all-encompassing role in the life and work of Stanley Kubrick, Stillman elaborated on his own Kubrick connection - from his love of Barry Lyndon to Barcelona and The Last Days Of Disco cinematographer John Thomas and how Thomas Gibson ended up in Eyes Wide Shut.

Whit Stillman Reflects on the 20th Anniversary of ‘The Last Days of Disco’

Among the memorable scenes from The Last Days of Disco is the easily discouraged Josh Neff’s (Matt Kesslar) dissection of Lady and the Tramp. Just as Disney released the pups from their vault this year, director Whit Stillman and select cast will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Disco at select screenings this summer.

The third film in the director’s “Doomed-Bourgeois-in-Love series” follows what today we call “frenemies,” Alice Kinnon (Chloë Sevigny) and Charlotte Pingress (Kate Beckinsale), as they spend their days working their way up the ladder at a New York publishing house and their nights dancing and romancing at a Studio 54-style nightclub.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to Toronto title Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami and is lining up a theatrical release in early April with a VOD and home entertainment release set for autumn 2018.

WestEnd Films, which handles world sales, has also sold the documentary about the iconic singer and performer to Germany (Ascot Elite), Switzerland (Praesens), Italy (Offine Ubu), Benelux (Arti Film), China (Lemon Tree), Scandinavia and Baltics (Non Stop), Poland (Against Gravity), the Middle East (Front Row), Ex-Yugoslavia (Demiurg) and Australia (Umbrella).

The well-received film, part music documentary and part biopic, was released by Trafalgar in the UK last October.

The deal between Kino Lorber and WestEnd Films was negotiated by Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber and Eve Schoukroun and Sofia Neves at WestEnd.

Why ‘The Big Sick’ Was the Indie Winner at the Summer Box Office
Summer box office was dismal, with totals down more than 15 percent from last year. Or was it? In the specialized realm, things are looking up. Last year, limited releases grossed less than $90 million; this year, it will be over $100 million.

That’s good news — but careful analysis still shows a troubled season riddled with issues and failures that should make top distributors take great care when bidding at the festivals this fall.

Some observations of the mixed-bag results:

There’s Only One Real Winner

Amazon’s “The Big Sick” grossed about $40 million. That’s the top performance of the year among independent/platform release titles, and a decent showing for the reported $12 million Sundance acquisition.
