Storyline

ROOM tells the extraordinary story of Jack, a spirited 5-year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted mother. Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical--they are trapped--confined to a 10-by-10-foot space that Ma has euphemistically named Room. Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack's curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma's resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world. Trivia

Many viewers were confused by the fact that Jack, a little boy, has very long hair. Some of these viewers have also developed a misunderstanding about Jack's gender and generated elaborate but incorrect theories speculating that Joy "knows" that Jack is a girl but somehow hides this fact from their captor so that he would not become interested in raping Jack the same way he regularly rapes Joy. In fact, Jack is indeed a boy, and the actual reason that both he and Joy have very long hair is simply that their captor doesn't groom them or let them have scissors or any sharp implement that could be used against him. Goofs

The police cars say Akron Police Department and cars have Ohio license plates, but just about every scene that's outdoors in a non-residential area has recognizable Toronto landmarks (e.g. Nathan Phillips Square, Apache Burger, Victoria Mills silos, Prince Edward [Bloor] Viaduct). Also, Akron has 15 buildings that are over 150 feet tall, but the view from the hospital window has about 30 skyscrapers. See more »

Quotes

[first lines]
Ma: Ssh. Go back to sleep.
Jack: [reciting to himself] Once upon a time, before I came, you cried and cried and watched TV all day, until you were a zombie. But then I zoomed down from heaven, through skylight, into Room. Whoosh-pshew! And I was kicking you from the inside. Boom, boom! And then I shot out onto Rug with my eyes wide open, and you cutt-ed the cord and said, "Hello, Jack!"

Infinitely deep, an experience I will not forget.
2 January 2016 | by imdmtSee all my reviews

*Insert all 9 & 10 reviews here* I was in awe during the entire film. Lenny Abrahamson & the writing team made sure there was not one dull moment. The addition of "insignificant" characters and plot twists are later realized to be so significant and influential in keeping the film alive throughout its duration. It was the little things that made this story one of the best I've seen in a long time. I experienced an entire palette of emotions all at once and was left in a deep level of curiosity and reflection. Very few films have the power to continue to influence its audience after the credits. Room is endless in the most beautiful way.
