Why Star Trek: Picard Won't Be Like The Last Jedi

Ryan Britt Jun 13, 2019

Pundits worry Trek is taking a cue from Star Wars by turning a hero into a grump, but adult rumination is what Trek has always been about.

Even though very little is known about the new Star Trek: Picard series, what we do know is enough for pundits and fans to already start making thematic assumptions. If you’re wrapped-up in the geek internet, you’ve probably already heard this one: Having a grumpy, retired Captain Picard in the new Star Trek series is similar to having a grumpy, exhilted Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

However, pundits forget: unlike Star Wars, The Next Generation was always been about olds, and Star Trek often draws its narratives not from coming-of-age tropes, but, instead, has always been about adults dealing with adult problems. If Picard is old and grumpy in the new show, it’s not

8 Recent TV Shows Cancelled Far Too Soon

Jamie Andrew Jun 7, 2019

We mourn the recent passing of Z Nation, Ash vs. Evil Dead, The Last Man On Earth, and more shows that left us unfairly soon...

Some shows take their curtain calls and ascend to legendary status mere moments after arriving on the stage; series like Fawlty Towers, The Leftovers, The Office, all of which enjoyed lean and compact stints, and were capped by their makers before the atrophy that often accompanies small screen longevity could set in.

Some shows roam and lumber, shedding viewers like rotting limbs and brittle digits, until a mixture of entropy and apathy leads them shambling to the grave.

Others – lame-legged lambs, and abominations of nature alike – are taken out and shot, quickly and mercifully. Yes, The Mist, we're talking about you.

And some are taken far, far too soon; mowed down in their prime, without a chance for a proper ending. These

Halo TV Show Being Compared To Game Of Thrones

Chances are, if you’re a longtime fan of Halo, you’ve been interested to see how the upcoming TV series will fare. That being said, when it comes to the highly-anticipated small screen adaptation, one’s level of devotion is not put to the test so much as one’s amount of patience.

It’s been over six years since 343 Industries announced it would be producing a live-action series alongside Steven Spielberg. The show has been through development hell since then – at one point, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp was attached to the project. Then, last year, Kyle Killen was hired as showrunner and executive producer, with Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) to direct and produce. A few unceremonious months later, Wyatt stepped down from the series due to scheduling conflicts.

To say that the show has hit some bumps along the way would be an understatement,

San Diego Comic-Con 2019: Amazon Will Return To With Huge Offsite, Screenings And More!

Each and every year Amazon seems to have a bigger and bigger presence at San Diego Comic-Con and for 2019 they appear to be gearing up to the biggest yet. The website, Cheddar recently spoke with Amazon Studios and they confirmed that they will indeed be onsite for San Diego Comic-Con 2019 and plan to rent out a 60,000 square foot space off-site.

We are assuming it will be the area where the immense “Jack Ryan” off-site exhibit was located last year, but this has not yet been confirmed and only our own speculation. Amazon Studios plans to promote it’s three brand new series, “The Expanse”, “Carnival Row” and “The Boys” at this year’s Con. Additionally, Cheddar revealed that Amazon is planning “participatory theater, stage performance and tech” exhibits during the day and that the space will also host screenings and parties as well.

The Best Canceled Shows That Deserve a ‘Deadwood’-Style Movie Wrap-Up – IndieWire Critics Survey

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.

This week’s question: Inspired by the return of “Deadwood,” what’s another show that deserves a movie follow-up /wrap-up?

Joyce Eng (@joyceeng61), GoldDerby

I’m going to be that person and say nothing deserves a follow-up. Sure, some shows “deserve” one, like “Deadwood,” but nothing really does. Things end and that’s Ok! Even if it’s a frustrating non-ending or cliffhanger because you got canceled. There are too many things continuing and being rebooted and revived that don’t need to be. And yes, I know there’s a huge difference between ending on your own terms and getting abruptly axed with no closure, but I’d rather just be content with what I already got than hope a two-hour movie 10 years later lives up to my expectations. Because let’s be real,

The Expanse Book 8 Review: Tiamat’s Wrath

The clear progression of scale in the universe of The Expanse reaches its peak with the reign of the Laconian Empire in Tiamat’s Wrath.

Books

Tiamat’s Wrath is the penultimate novel in James S.A. Corey’s The Expanse series, and it certainly feels like an epic reaching its conclusion. James Holden, Naomi Nagata, Alex Kamal, Amos Burton, and Bobbie Draper are already legends of a former age after the 30 year time jump in Book 7, Persepolis Rising, and even though the team is separated in this installment, with Holden still on Laconia as at the end of the previous novel and Bobbie and Naomi handling different aspects of the resistance’s efforts, the sheer scale of the obstacle to overcome is worthy of the characters’ elevated status, even if they’re not together.

It’s important to remember that as soon as the protomolecule was introduced in the first novel,
