During filming, a French tourist mistook Richard Gere - who was in full wardrobe - for a homeless man and gave him some leftover pizza. Gere happily took the bag and thanked the woman. The tourist later found out that it was Gere after reading about the film in a New York Post article.
As filming commenced, Richard Gere was worried that he would be recognized on the streets, shattering the illusion of him playing an essentially invisible man. He needn't have worried. Of all the thousands of passers-by that he encountered in the streets, only 2 asked him if he was Richard Gere.
Time Out Of Mind shares its name with a Bob Dylan album from 1997. Richard Gere was one of six actors (Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Ben Whishaw, Marcus Carl Franklin being the others) to play Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes's 2007 film, I'm Not There.
