Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’ to Release in China
Sultan” a 2016 film about a past-it wrestler looking to make an improbable comeback, is the latest Indian movie to score a release in mainland Chinese theaters. Starring Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma, the film is set to be released in China on Aug. 31.

Produced by Yash Raj Films, “Sultan” has been picked up by E Stars China, the indie distributor behind many of the other recent Indian success stories in China. The film is set to play on an initial 11,000 screens, with about 40,000 screenings per day, according to Yash Raj.

Over the past two years, Indian films have found unprecedented success with mainstream theatrical releases in China. Significantly, most have been what Indian studios describe as “content-driven” titles, rather than the star-driven and Masala movies from mainstream Bollywood.

The biggest Indian film success was last year’s “Dangal,” which earned $193 million. That inspired the release of more unlikely titles including

Dying To Survive, a Chinese black comedy with social drama overtones that we’ve been talking about for the past few weeks as a potential breakout during the July blackout on Hollywood movies, is showing serious signs of life in the Middle Kingdom. What’s more, it’s not the sort of film we’ve seen before during this period, and has spurred debate on serious issues.

Four days of previews began last weekend with the official July 6 release date backed up to July 5 as buzz swelled. With today’s locally-reported one-day estimate of about $57M, Dying To Survive has grossed an estimated $141M through Saturday (it’s also on about 500 IMAX screens). The film, directed by feature first-timer Muye Wen, has a 9 score on Douban and 9.7 on Maoyan. “Race 3 is a mess of a movie” – Subhash K Jha Review

Race 3

Starring Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Jacqueline Fernandez, Saqib Saleem, Daisy Shah

Directed by Remo d’Souza

By the time Salman Khan ripped off his shirt and Bobby Deol followed suit, I was ready to rip off my hair in exasperation. This maddening mishmash of hot babes and cool guys is a roaring, grunting mess of a movie.

Trashy beyond endurance, loud beyond the threshold of tolerance and outrageous beyond all definitions of lowbrow entertainment, Race 3 gives a bad name to the Salman Khan brand. Just when we thought he was trying to build a more durable variety of mass entertainment by reinventing himself in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and the unfortunate Tubelight, Race 3 comes along to remind us with infuriating aggressiveness, that when it comes to Salman Khan there is a very thin line betweenrationale and absurdity.

China Box Office: India’s ‘Toilet’ Wins Wash Out Weekend

China Box Office: India’s ‘Toilet’ Wins Wash Out Weekend
India’s “Toilet Ek Prem Katha” landed on top of the Chinese box office, on what was the second lowest grossing weekend of the year. “Toilet” earned $9.09 million, ahead of holdover Chinese fantasy romance “How Long Will I Love U” in second place.

Despite the low score, the win is a further triumph for diversity and a sign of audience development in Chinese theatres.

The odds should have been against the film, pitched as “Toilet Hero.” The story of one man’s attempt to bring sanitation to his village, the film’s central concept portrays a low development era that China left behind many years ago. And its male lead Akshay Kumar, although well loved in India, is little known in China.

Nevertheless, what Indian analysts call content-driven films (a distinction that marks them apart from packages dominated by star casting), have found real connections and growing interest in China in the past two years.
