Inconsistent but not bad
12 July 2015 | by acydraenSee all my reviews

I am a huge fan of the movies so I approached this show because I love the source material and not because I saw the promos or enjoy mtv regularly. In some ways, this series is aimed at my demographic, people who recognize iconic themes and motifs from the films and will enjoy the references and updates. At the same time, though, the show tries to be really relevant to its teen audience, many of which are too young to have seen the first movie before it was considered dated. The use of social media is too prevalent, with every few lines mentioning facebook or Instagram. Even if this is accurate in terms of how teenagers speak today, it really detracts from the drama of the fact that PEOPLE ARE DYING.

Similarly, the show is "obvious" about its teen audience when it shows adults who look nearly as young as the high schoolers. Only audience members aged 16 or under would likely see the adult cast as authority figures, though this is actually unnecessary because the grown-ups are kind of useless.

Ultimately, the writing is not particularly sharp, and the actors are unrealistic in their roles, but a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor really makes all of that fit just right. This isn't a show that sets out to be a slasher movie, this is a show that sets out to be ABOUT slasher movies, and that, at least, it does really well. It's definitely my guilty pleasure and my DVR is set to record.
