Transgender Immigrant Pic ‘Lingua Franca,’ Thriller ‘Only Beasts’ to Bow at Venice Days

  • Variety
New York-based Filipina filmmaker Isabel Sandoval’s “Lingua Franca,” about a transgender immigrant, is among 11 competition entries, all world premieres, that will launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section.

The only U.S. entry set to compete in the section modeled on Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, “Lingua Franca” is Sandoval’s third work. It follows “Apparition” (2012), a period drama about cloistered Filipina nuns praised by Variety’s Richard Kuipers as an “outstanding sophomore feature.”

Produced by Tony- and Grammy-winning Filipino producer Jhett Tolentino, and by Darlene Malimas and Carlo Velayo, “Lingua Franca” is set in Brighton Beach, New York, where a transgender Filipina immigrant named Olivia – played by Sandoval, who is herself transgender – scrambles to avoid deportation. She becomes involved with a Russian slaughterhouse worker who is unaware that she’s trans.

Venice Days artistic director Giorgio Gosetti said that this year’s selection is characterized

Halle Bailey Got Her Singing Start With Someone Very Close to Her - Her Sister Chloe

  • Popsugar
While The Little Mermaid's Ariel might be the youngest of seven singing mermaids, it turns out Halle Bailey, the future live-action Ariel, is the younger sister of just one singing superstar, Chloe Bailey. But, much like the original Disney film, Halle and her sister have been harmonizing together for some time now (in their sister pop-r&b duo Chloe x Halle and not under the sea).

Chloe and Halle were born in Atlanta and raised in Los Angeles. Chloe, who is 21, is just about two years older than Halle. They rose to fame when they made their YouTube debut at the ages of 13 and 11 with their own covers of pop songs. Even more amazing? Their first post was a cover of Beyoncé's "Best Thing I Never Had." It was actually their cover of Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts" that skyrocketed their names to the top of the YouTube charts. As a

On the heels of the massively successful limited series Chernobyl, Sky and HBO are teaming back up to bring another limited series to the cable outlet entitled The Third Day. Marc Munden will direct with Adrian Sturges producing alongside series writer and co-creator Dennis Kelly. Variety reports the following synopsis for the series:

Law stars as Sam, who after being drawn to a mysterious Island off the British coast, is thrown into the unusual world of its secretive inhabitants. Isolated from the mainland, the rituals of the island begin to overwhelm him, and he is confronted by a trauma from his past. As the line between reality and fantasy blurs, Sam finds himself immersed in a quest that puts him at odds with the islanders.

This sounds interesting and like it could get a little crazy. Production is set to start in July, and we should be seeing this series
