Storyline

What happens when you combine "Goodfellas" with college basketball? You get "Playing for the Mob," the story of how mobster Henry Hill -- played by Ray Liotta in the 1990 Martin Scorsese classic -- helped orchestrate the fixing of Boston College basketball games in 1978 and 1979. The details of that point-shaving scandal are revealed for the first time on film through the testimony of the players, the federal investigators and the actual fixers, including Hill, who died shortly after he was interviewed. "Playing for the Mob" may be set in the seemingly golden world of college basketball, but like "Goodfellas," this is a tale of greed, betrayal and reckoning. Ultimately, they both share the same message: With that much money at stake, you can't trust anybody. Written by ESPN Films

A Must-See For Organized Crime Buffs

The mob, including Jimmy Burke and Henry Hill, become the focus of a point shaving controversy at Boston College.

The story of Henry Hill has been well-told, both in the Nicholas Pleggi book "Wiseguy" and in the movie adaptation "Goodfellas". But the focus tended to be on the Lufthansa heist and never so much on the basketball gambling. And even when such a topic is covered, it is rarely told from the point of view of the players involved.

This documentary is incredible for getting all the basketball players on the record, as well as a coach, some of the mobsters and other related figures in the scandal. Someone trying to find the truth could not ask for a better-balanced approach to the often-exaggerated tales of mob life.
