Sanchez becomes a person of interest in a murder investigation when his mother's home caregiver is found dead hours after getting in a fight with Sanchez.
Julio, in visiting his mother, finds her alone and helpless on the floor. When her caregiver suddenly appears, drunk and saying he went on an errand, Sanchez spots him holding his mother's ATM card and $20 bills and assumes he's been stealing. A fight breaks out and the man runs away. Upon also finding his mother's jewelry box missing, Julio asks Lt. Provenza to check the man out, whereby Major Crimes finds him dead in his apartment. Sharon immediately turns the matter over in Internal Affairs to get Julio properly cleared. Meanwhile, as the missing jewelry box anonymously returns intact, Rusty handles the discovery of Sharon's ex-husband Jack drunk in their apartment.
Detective Julio Sanchez found his recently hospital-released mother Maria fell from the couch, 'neglected' by the paid minder who was out to get a medication refills, suspects him of stealing jewelry and cash with her AT card, and violently chases the man. When his corpse is found at home, fatally beaten, Julio is the obvious prime suspect, so IA sergeant Staples must formally handle the case. However the colleagues are eager to prove his innocence and catch the real killer, but protecting Julio against himself isn't easy either. Yet the local gang boss Javier Mendoza and his nephew Pablo are linked to the case. Meanwhile Rusty handles the arrival by kept key of Sharon's ex Jackson, who gets drunk and crashes on the couch after Rusty wisely confiscates his car keys.
